Two, three and four year olds: Information for Ukrainian Refugee Families

The Secretary of State for Education, Nadhim Zahawi, has written a letter to local chief executives and directors of children’s services. The letter confirms that children who arrive from Ukraine will have the right to access suitable education and childcare whilst in the UK.

Two year old funded children

Some two year olds could be entitled for to 15 hours of funded childcare a week at a childcare setting from the term after their second birthday (or any point thereafter), if the family meets eligibility criteria. Children are required to get a funding code by applying online here.

Three and four year old funded children

Every child aged three and four is eligible to access early education funding, up to 15 hours per week, irrespective of the immigration status of the child or their parent(s). All children are eligible to the entitlement from the beginning of the funding period following their third birthday.

30 funded hours for three and four year olds

Parents who are working could receive an additional 15 hours to make up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week. To qualify, each parent (or lone parent) must earn at least the minimum equivalent of 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage or national living wage. Parents can apply using the online childcare service.
