Rail Safety in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Rail Trespass on the railways in the Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole area is monitored by Network Rail however, parents/carers and professionals working with children and young people have a key role in ensuring that everyone is educated about the dangers of the railways and the ways that people can keep themselves safe.

'Trespass' covers a range of situations and incidents including being on the electrified tracks, legs over platforms, trainsurfing/climbing on bridge, jumping into the river from the railway bridge, graffiti, obstruction and walking down a sloping platform.

Children and young people are risking serious injury or death by making the wrong choice around the railway because they don’t understand the risks and dangers associated with the railway, in particular the speed that trains go (125mph), the fact that the rails are electrified (750 VOLTS that are NEVER turned off) and also that overhead electrical cables are electrified all the time and that ELECTRICITY CAN JUMP.

Educational resources about rail safety

There are a number of educational online resources for parents, teenagers and young people which communicate the dangers of the railways.

Note: the following three resources are aimed at young people rather than children as they may be distressing for younger viewers. We recommend that parents/carers and professionals watch these alone prior to sharing them with young people.

Resources for younger children are available through Thomas the Tank Engine stories 'Stay Safe with Thomas'.

Further information and resources for parents/carers, teachers (both Primary and Secondary), children and young people can be found via the Network Rail website.

Network Rail runs a Rail Safety Awareness week from 2 to 8 July each year so please look at the site for more information on this and resources that support it.
