How do you communicate with the parent / carer whose child has SEND?
Parents/carers can email or call me to arrange an initial visit to my setting when the needs of the child can be discussed. I am always happy to arrange a mutually convenient time to discuss their child’s progress and any concerns they may have. I like to work in partnership with parents/carers and share ideas to benefit their child. If a parent/carer has concerns, I ask that they speak to me and we can discuss their concerns and the way forward.
How do you help children settle into your setting?
Before joining my setting, I offer settling in sessions to suit the needs of the child. This will be discussed with parents/carers beforehand taking into account any strategies we can use to help the child settle as easily as possible.
What help and support does your setting offer to children with SEND as they move rooms or move on to school?
As a childminder, children do not move rooms here. When a child is shortly transitioning to school, I engage with the parents/carers to make the process as easy as possible. This involves preparing the child for the transition in an appropriate way and exchanging information with the new setting.
How do you find out how each child likes to learn?
I observe how a child learns and track their progress. I give children a choice of activities reflecting their interests to ensure their learning is fun. I encourage a partnership with parents/carers so they are aware and actively involved in their child’s learning by sharing information/ideas on a regular basis i.e. daily diary/what’s app/ conversations.
Inclusive practice / SEND training and expertise within this organisation
I have done SENCO training with Dorset County Council and keep up to date on local information. If a child in my setting has a specific need in an area I am unfamiliar with, I will seek advice and training for myself and parents/carers if appropriate.
