How do you communicate with the parent / carer whose child has SEND?
- informal chats at collection times daily
- 2-way diaries
- Early Years Foundation Stage Development trackers
- formal mutually convenient meetings to discuss the child’s progress/development and arrange specific support to aid development,
- if needed, smaller short-term targets to be jointly agreed and supported at home and at the childminders, jointly regularly reviewed and reassessed
If a parent is unhappy with the provision an initial discussion of the issues with me, if a solution cannot be found a period of notice is given and parents should seek an alternative setting. Formal complaints can be directed to Ofsted. A copy of policies and procedures is held by the parents.
How do you help children settle into your setting?
- joint parent and child settling in sessions,
- child only settling in sessions initially short time period gradually increasing,
- if needed photos of childminder and home and garden given to family, enquiring about child’s favourite toys and activities
What help and support does your setting offer to children with SEND as they move rooms or move on to school?
Formal transition form will be completed by the childminder, using information from their ongoing observations, and parents. This is then given to next setting/school, followed by a telephone discussion/ meeting with their keyworker/teacher. The next setting keyworker/teacher is welcome to visit my home to see the child. Visiting school if possible, walks past school, photo book of school and teacher.
How do you find out how each child likes to learn?
Informal chats at collection times, regular observations, reviewing EHC, specific home-based interactions complimenting EHC targets, starting out bags. Focusing on small specific targets jointly agreed with parents and using the EYFS as guidance, if needed support/ advice from LA Early Years SENCO, Speech and Language therapy, Occupational Therapy and children centres. As well as researching information online. All specialist work will be discussed and agreed with the parents, and their views recorded. Children’s views will be sought and recorded, very young children’s Regularly reviewing child’s progress with parents.
