Description:

How do you communicate with the parent / carer whose child has SEND?

  • We are open, transparent and supportive to all parents and families.
  • Families have the opportunity to visit the setting, explore the services we have to offer and environment.
  • We have regular face to face talks with parents in the setting about their child, progress and development.
  • We have a SENCO who doesn’t have key children so is more free to support each individual child with additional needs.
  • We ensure our SENCO and deputy SENCO liaise regularly together to share ideas, information and support each other and the staffing team.
  • Our SENCO team regularly train and update their knowledge and have recently undergone Signalong to further support speech and language and our children in the setting.
  • Our SENCO and staff team will update parents daily about their day, wellbeing, temperament and achievements.
  • We have a interactive Learning Diary that outlines children’s photos, observations, next steps and daily summary.
  • We work with parents through meetings, regular updates, parents evenings, newsletters with ideas and activities and emails
  • If a parent is unhappy with any part of our provision then we ask them to speak with us, email or phone through any concerns, speak to their key person or arrange a meeting to talk through and resolve.

How do you help children settle into your setting?

  • We have an excellent settling policy and procedure.
  • We welcome parents with lots of information about the setting, encourage them to ask questions, understand how we work and support families.
  • We liaise through newsletters, emails and zoom meetings sharing all about me, health care plans and completing all necessary paperwork. We arrange settling sessions and work with each individual child to support their needs.
  • We invite parents to spend a short while together for the first settling session and build on a trusting relationship.
  • We move through settling sessions gently to support the child and family.
  • We allow both the key person and the room lead to support new families and children.
  • We advise parents that have expressed interest in further support for their child that we have a SENCO and advise them of their role in the Nursery.
  • Our SENCO is Emma and her Deputy is Laura. Emma works closely with multiagency teams and the area SENCO. Emma is able to talk with any parents who may want further information about the care and service we provide.

What help and support does your setting offer to children with SEND as they move rooms or move on to school?

  • Once again we have supportive policies and procedures in place to advise parents of any change and support children in the change or transition.
  • We have a transition from the baby unit through to the 2-5’s unit.
  • Parents are invited for a two year check, a meeting to liaise with their current key person and their child’s new key person.
  • They are given a tour around the 2-5’s unit and Nursery as t has been some time since they last viewed and were looking for different things at that point. They will be introduced to the team and shown around all the activities we have and all environments.
  • When a child is moving to school then we liaise with parents through transition forms, emails, meetings, opportunities to share other children going to the same schools, share in children’s excitement at school visits, welcome schools to call us, come into the setting to visit or we are happy to liaise with the school visiting their provision so we can share further with our children making the transition.
  • We send out emails and information about activities that help in preparation for school.
  • We arrange photograph days, parties, leavers presents and celebrate their time at Nursery.
  • Parents download their child’s learning and development journal.

How do you find out how each child likes to learn?

  • We use an all about me from parents to advise of their children’s likes, dislikes, favourite stories, rhymes and experiences.
  • We use a three week celebration as a starter point to really get to know each child, their likes, dislikes, interests, favourite activities and personalities. This is part of the settling procedure that supports getting to know a child and their family.
  • We have our key persons use in the moment planning enabling each child the opportunity to follow their own directions of play.
  • We use schemas and understanding of children’s learning and development to plan next steps appropriate to each child’s needs and plan the environment and experiences accordingly.
  • We support all children to share their views, feelings, opinions and thoughts. We use a process of understanding that an activity is about the journey not always the end product.
  • Children play and explore, they engage and have fun, they learn and discover. Staff sensitively interact and support, empowering children through choice, understanding and exploration.
  • Children become self confident, self aware and self assured in their play, independently making choices and sharing amongst peers and teachers.
  • Each child is treated individually in the setting ensuring their needs are catered for in a bespoke way according to their strengths, areas of development and according to their characters and temperaments. Staff are tuned into their key children and have a wonderful bond with each and every one.

Inclusive practice / SEND training and expertise within this organisation

  • Our SENCO and Deputy SENCO have full and up to date training.
  • Our SENCO has recently up dated her training in signalong to support children even more
  • We cascade all information from our SENCO and Area SENCO to the team and put in strategies and support for children where necessary.
  • All staff working with children with IEP will work with the SENCO and parents about targets.
  • We offer information, support and help to our parents. We use any advise, newsletters, BCP or children’s centre information and pass on.
