How do you communicate with the parent / carer whose child has SEND?
Initial question about any concerns / additional needs/diagnosis on the application form, followed up by a conversation with the SENCo. We have multi lingual staff if communication is difficult due to EAL.
Daily updates and conversations on arrival and departure as well as emails or messages where appropriate.
How do you help children settle into your setting?
Every child has two 1hr long settling sessions but these are flexible and can be extended to allow each individual child to settle at their own pace. We introduce a key worker and parents fill in an ‘All about me form’ for their child so we know a little about how to best settle them.
What help and support does your setting offer to children with SEND as they move rooms or move on to school?
Information is shared and strategies we use are shared too. Meetings usually take place with parents and the child in their new school. Familiar routines are followed and any new ones gradually introduced at the child’s pace. We use visuals and photos to help with understanding.
How do you find out how each child likes to learn?
- All about me form provided by parent and chatting to the parents about their child
- observing the child during the settling sessions,
- Regular observations and planning accordingly
Inclusive practice / SEND training and expertise within this organisation
Our SENCo has 10 years experience in the role and completed the required training. She also has training in PIEC-D, ELKLAN, and attended Positive about Autism training. We do our best to ensure that children with SEND can access every aspect of our setting and the learning provided by looking regularly at how we can adapt our practice. All staff are committed to inclusive practice.
