Therapeutic stories

Therapeutic stories are used to help children process troubling feelings and experiences. The characters and events in the stories subtly mirror the child’s experiences, helping them to explore and develop their understanding of ideas. Stories can help children:

  • to share and understand feelings
  • feel that they are not alone in their situation and that there is hope
  • to view their difficulties from a different point of view
  • explore new skills or coping strategies

Psychologists write stories for a child’s situation.  They may also write stories collaboratively with a child.
