There are various costs related to driving including the cost of:

• your driving licence
• driving lessons
• your theory and practical tests

If you choose to buy a car you will also need to consider the cost of:

• the car (buying or leasing)
• car insurance and tax
• MOT
• running costs, such as petrol
• ongoing repairs and maintenance

You won't have to pay for all these costs straight away as some of these costs will come with time.

To help with the costs, you may be able to get: ​

• Personal Independence Payment (PIP) which helps with mobility costs
• a Blue Badge which allows you to park in extra places to other drivers
• an NUS Extra card which can get you discounted driving lessons
• welfare benefits and student discounts
• vehicle tax exemption or reduction
