Working with families to provide the right support when it's needed

Your mental health - Start for Life (pregnancy)

Having a baby can be a time of great joy, but it can also be stressful, which can lead to changes in feelings and emotions. It is a big life event and some people find it easier to adapt than others.

If you are pregnant or having a baby and are finding your emotions are having a negative impact on your life, you may be experiencing a mental health difficulty. For many mothers-to-be, dads and partners, this can lead to various difficulties such as anxiety, low mood and depression.

One in five women and birthing people will experience some form of emotional or mental health difficulties during pregnancy. One in ten dads might also experience a mental health difficulty, or low mood issue during their partner's pregnancy. In most cases, this will get better quickly with the support of partners, friends and family and there is a wide range of people who can offer you support when you need it throughout your pregnancy and beyond. Your GP or midwife are a good starting point, you won’t be telling them anything they haven’t heard before.
